"Hindle really wakes you up"

This week has seen a truly excellent production of the classic Hindle Wakes by Carleton Theatre Group.

The play, written in 1910 tells of a young woman, Fanny Hawthorne, who is on holiday for Wakes Week with her friend, but goes away for the weekend with her boss's son. What is the response of the families when they find out? In those days marriage was the common response but is Fanny having any of it.

The play was presented on an open stage which was delightfully dressed to capture the eye. The cast of 9 was uniformly excellent, giving confident and sympathetic readings of their characters. The whole experience was very enjoyable and made for a very entertaining night out. With tickets costing £7 [£5 on Wednesday] this represented terrific value for money..
